My recent stay in Bodø, Norway, was a profoundly enriching experience that greatly contributed to both my academic and personal development. The visit was centered around attending a series of presentations and engaging in interdisciplinary research within the circumpolar region. This report outlines the highlights and key takeaways from this remarkable journey.
Engagement with International Scholars
The conference offered a unique platform to interact with esteemed scholars from Greenland, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. These interactions proved invaluable in enhancing my own international project based in Denmark. The exchange of ideas and perspectives with peers from circumpolar countries has significantly enriched my understanding and approach to my research.
Unplanned Meeting with Inuit Circumpolar Council Delegate
A particularly noteworthy experience was an impromptu lunch with a representative from the Inuit Circumpolar Council's youth delegation from Greenland. This meeting was instrumental in refining the focus of my project, which aims to center youth voices. The delegate's insights into the experience of Inuit youth navigating university life in Copenhagen were both enlightening and inspiring. This exchange provided practical input that will be crucial as I continue to develop my project with Kalaallit youth.
Group Collaboration Activities
Participation in group activities added a dynamic dimension to the trip. One highlight was the Foreign Policy trivia night, where my team advanced to the final round. Competing in this setting alongside some of the brightest minds in the Arctic policy sphere was both exhilarating and a point of pride. It underscored the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and the importance of integrating diverse perspectives into policy discussions.
Lecture on "Fractured North"
A standout moment was attending a lecture on the "Fractured North" by a renowned Arctic studies researcher. The lecture provided a comprehensive analysis of the geopolitical crisis resulting from Russia's violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. The ensuing discussions on how scientists can contribute to mending geopolitical fissures through collaborative research were particularly stimulating and thought-provoking.
Final Dinner with Aleutian Colleague
On the final night, I had the pleasure of dining with an Aleutian colleague from Anchorage, who shares my background in the counseling field. This conversation was a highlight, allowing for a deep exchange of ideas and experiences related to our shared field and regional contexts.
Conclusion
My stay in Bodø was an unforgettable experience that has left a lasting impact on me as an Indigenous researcher and former citizen of the North. The opportunity to engage with diverse scholars, participate in stimulating discussions, and make valuable connections has greatly enhanced my work and personal growth.
