Dr. Nafisa Yeasmin will present on the immigration and security aspects of the Finnish Arctic. Dr. Nafisa Yeasmin presents immigration and security aspects of the Finnish Arctic region. She is from the University of Lapland, Finland, and is the lead of the UArctic Thematic Network on Arctic Migration. She is a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lapland, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tampere in Finland. Her research focuses on Arctic migration with a particular focus on sustainable entrepreneurship development, socio-economic integration, regional development, migration management, community resilience, and social inclusion. with the well-being of young people and women with migrant backgrounds." She is the Academic of the Year 2019 in Finland.

Dr. Heather Nicol will present on Arctic borders and transnational actors. She is the Director of the School for the Study of Canada and a Professor in the School of the Environment at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario (Canada). She received her BA from the University of Toronto, her MES. from York University and her PhD. from Queen’s University. Her northern research interests lie in the critical geopolitics in the circumpolar North and the relationship between the interests of nation-states and peoples of the North. The geopolitical context of the North and the contemporary issues raised in the North which create puzzles for sovereignty and governance have fuelled Prof Nicol’s interest in the North. Prof Nicol is also involved in the Thematic Network on Geopolitics and Security through the University of the Arctic and the Northern Research Foundation.
