Urbanisation and infrastructure in the Arctic – Challenges to sustainability
Wed, Dec 04, 2013
The Arctic is undergoing substantial changes regarding urbanisation, settlement patterns, occupational structures, climate and migration, creating challenges for engineering, technical and societal strategies as well as solutions. The development enhances the need for affordable, robust and sustainable engineering solutions that fulfil technological demands under changing Arctic climate conditions. It is crucial to develop solutions that are aligned with local communities and their structures and to promote a positive interaction between the local cultures and the new incoming cultures. Increasing geographical inequality in population challenges the national planning and requires technical as well as societal innovations regarding transport infrastructure, commercial development etc. The Artek Event 2014 offers the opportunity for participants from the industry, the public sector, the science community and others to present, discuss and exchange ideas and experience.
